These are different markets, not a contradiction. Dealers list restored, checked tools and price accordingly; marketplaces carry everything from collector-grade down to parts. Compare within a row, not across the table.
About Chaplin bench planes
Chaplin's Patent planes were an American design of the later 19th century, made and sold by Tower & Lyon of New York. The line covers bench and block planes with cast-iron bodies and distinctive iron handles, often coated, rather than the wooden totes of Stanley's contemporaries. Smooth planes in the smaller No. 3 and No. 4 sizes, corrugated or wide-body adjustable block planes, and the No. 12 chute board plane sit above the plain models; intact handle coating, crisp casting marks, and a full original cutter matter most.
The 13 sales behind these figures come from Jim Bode Value Guide (13), and run from 2020 to 2025; 1 closed in the last twelve months.
