About Shelton bench planes

Shelton was an American toolmaker based in Connecticut that produced budget-priced planes and braces in the mid-20th century, competing with Stanley on price rather than refinement. The bench planes are the mainstay here, with the No. 04 smoother appearing alongside block planes such as the No. 18 low-angle and the pressed-steel No. 118, plus the occasional 10-inch bit brace. Value follows condition closely on these: intact japanning, clean unpitted irons, no cracks in the casting, and complete original lever caps and adjusters separate a clean example from a user, and a marked iron and decal add to it.
