About Spofford braces

Spofford is the name behind the split-chuck brace pattern made in Connecticut and produced for decades by the John S. Fray Company of Bridgeport. Instead of a shell chuck with jaws, the head of the chuck is split and clamped onto the bit tang by a knurled thumbscrew, a simple arrangement that holds tapered bits firmly and is still usable today. Sweep is the main variable: the common 8, 10, and 12 inch sizes turn up far more often than a 17 inch, and model numbers such as 108 and 112 track that range. Value follows a crack-free chuck, clean threads on the clamping screw, an intact wooden head and handle, and legible stamping.

The 13 sales behind these figures come from Jim Bode Value Guide (12) and Ted Dawson Antique Tools (1), and run from 2021 to 2024.
