About Brown & Sharpe

Brown & Sharpe was a Providence, Rhode Island firm that built machine tools and precision measuring instruments from the nineteenth century onward. Among the squares and calipers recorded here, its strength is shop metrology: machinist's rules, combination and try squares, dividers, and caliper rules like the No. 391 and the No. 677 caliper and wire gauge. Condition drives value, since pitting or a bent blade ruins accuracy; crisp graduations, matched sets, and original boxes as on the near-mint 6 inch try square add to it, and unusual patterns such as the Ames patent center-finding square stand apart from plain rules.
