About H.D. Smith

H.D. Smith & Co. worked in Plantsville, Connecticut, from the late nineteenth century into the early twentieth. The firm is identified with its Perfect Handle pattern, in which a steel tang runs the full length of the grip with wood scales riveted to each side, and that construction shows up here on both ball peen hammers and 8-inch drawknives. Value follows crisp stamped markings, tight unsplit scales with all rivets present, an unpitted head or blade, and a drawknife with straight handles and plenty of blade left ahead of the bevel.
