About Harvey Peace

Harvey Peace ran the Vulcan Saw Works in Brooklyn, New York, and was one of the larger American saw makers of the late nineteenth century before the operation passed to Disston. Backsaws are the bulk of the recorded work, and the sample bears that out with brass-back carcass and tenon saws alongside full-size rip handsaws. Crisp, readable etches, brass rather than steel backs, and the patented handle designs such as the No. P70 add value, as do hardware-store retailer marks like C.H. Bill & Son and unusual combination tools. Pitting, shortened or kinked plates, cracked or chipped handles, and missing or replaced sawnuts pull an example down.
