About Sears
Two different American sources share this name: W.B. Sears & Co. of Middletown, New York, a saw maker, and Sears, Roebuck, the mail-order retailer that sold tools made under contract by other firms. The saw-maker tools here are backed dovetail saws in 8-inch sizes, while the retailer's side accounts for chisels, draw knives and machines like the bandsaw and scroll saw marked or made for the catalog trade. Clear etching on a saw plate, original tooth line and an unbroken handle carry a backsaw; chisels and draw knives want full-length blades, readable stamps and sound handles. Machinery sells on working condition, intact stands and guards, not on the badge.
