About W. Butcher
W. Butcher was a Sheffield, England edge tool maker whose cast steel chisels, gouges and razors were widely exported to America in the 19th century. The recorded work is mostly bench and timber-framing edge tools: crank neck and bevel edge paring chisels, long pig sticker mortise chisels, heavy framing chisels, and incannel and tang gouges. Length matters, since blades shortened by sharpening bring less than full-length examples like the 11 to 13 inch chisels here; wide sizes such as the 2 inch and 1 1/2 inch outsell narrow ones. Crisp stamps, sound unsplit handles, and no pitting or mushroomed ends support value.
