About Winchester

Winchester Repeating Arms of New Haven, Connecticut sold a broad hardware and hand tool line under its own name in the 1920s, with the planes made by Sargent and other tools bought in from established manufacturers. Bench planes, saws, chisels and hatchets all carried the brand, and the four-digit plane numbers such as 3005 and 3206 correspond to Sargent's own sizes, here a smoother and a corrugated jumbo smoother. Value follows a crisp, legible Winchester mark on the iron and body, complete original cutters and totes without cracks, and full plates with clean etches on saws; larger and less common sizes like the 4 1/2C outrank plain No. 4 smoothers.
