About D.R. Barton chisels

D.R. Barton was a Rochester, New York edge tool maker whose work dates to the nineteenth century, with tools stamped D.R. BARTON 1832 ROCHESTER N.Y. The name is tied to heavy chisels and timber framing slicks, along with paring chisels, gouges, broad axes and occasional bench planes. Wide slicks in 3 to 3 1/2 inch sizes and offset patterns carry more weight than narrow bench chisels, as do rosewood-handled paring chisels and gouges. Crisp stamping, full unshortened blade length, an uncracked original handle, and no pitting at the edge separate a strong example from a worn one.

The 13 sales behind these figures come from Jim Bode Value Guide (10), Jim Bode Tools (2) and Ted Dawson Antique Tools (1), and run from 2021 to 2026; 3 closed in the last twelve months. 4 listings for sets, pairs or lots of D.R. Barton chisels were left out, because a set's price is not one tool's price.
