About Herring Bros. chisels
Herring Bros. was an English maker of carving tools, working in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The recorded sales are all carving gouges and chisels, which is the work the firm is known for, including numbered sweeps such as the no. 29 spoon gouge and unusual profiles like a gull wing. Boxwood handles in original, uncracked condition help, as do wide sizes like the 1 1/4 inch spoon gouge and clear numbering on the blade. Heavy pitting, a shortened blade from repeated regrinding, or a replaced handle pull an example down.
The 3 sales behind these figures come from Jim Bode Value Guide (2) and Jim Bode Tools (1), and run from 2023 to 2026; 1 closed in the last twelve months. 8 listings for sets, pairs or lots of Herring Bros. chisels were left out, because a set's price is not one tool's price.
