About J. Howarth chisels

A Sheffield edge tool maker working in the nineteenth century, Howarth built a reputation on chisels and gouges for cabinet and joinery work. The recorded sales run almost entirely to edge tools of that kind: heavy pig sticker and swan neck mortise chisels, long paring chisels, and paring gouges. Length and width drive value, since long paring chisels and gouges over an inch wide are harder to find unshortened, as are swan neck patterns. Original boxwood or other handles in sound condition, a clear maker's stamp, and plenty of blade left above the shoulder all count for more; regrinds, shortened blades, replaced handles, and pitting count against.

The 11 sales behind these figures come from Jim Bode Value Guide (7), Jim Bode Tools (2) and Ted Dawson Antique Tools (2), and run from 2021 to 2026; 4 closed in the last twelve months.
