About James Cam chisels
James Cam was a Sheffield edge tool maker whose stamped chisels date to the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The recorded sales are almost entirely chisels, and the sample reflects the range that carries his mark: heavy oval-bolstered pig sticker mortise chisels, wide framing chisels, and numbered sweep carving gouges. Length matters, since these tools were sharpened back hard over two centuries and a blade still carrying most of its original reach is worth more than a stub. A crisp, fully legible maker's stamp, an uncracked original handle, and a sound bolster with no welded repairs separate strong examples from tired ones.
The 13 sales behind these figures come from Jim Bode Value Guide (13), and run from 2021 to 2025. 1 listing for sets, pairs or lots of James Cam chisels was left out, because a set's price is not one tool's price.
