About Underhill chisels

Underhill Edge Tool Company was an American edge tool maker based in Nashua, New Hampshire, working from the 19th century into the early 20th. The name is tied to heavy timber-framing steel, and the recorded sales run that way: slicks from 2 to 3 1/2 inches wide, long framing and mortise chisels, and a side axe. Width and length drive value, with wide slicks in the 3-inch range standing above narrower chisels. A sound original or rosewood handle, a clear maker's stamp, and plenty of remaining blade above the edge matter most; pitting, shortened blades, and replaced handles pull an example down.
