About Disston coping saws

Henry Disston founded his saw works in Philadelphia in 1840, and the firm grew into the largest American saw manufacturer, operating under names including Disston & Sons well into the twentieth century. Hand saws and backsaws make up the bulk of the output, with sidelines in squares, bevels, and card scrapers such as the No. 20. Early marks like Disston & Son, numbered models like the No. 5 brass-back tenon saw, and patent pieces such as the Disston & Morss rosewood Fisher patent protractor bevel sit above the common later saws. Full-length plates with sharp etching, tight unsplit handles, and crisp medallions carry the value; heavy pitting, shortened plates, and replaced or cracked totes cut it.
