About Spiers 7 1/2 inch infill planes
Stewart Spiers worked in Ayr, Scotland, and his shop built infill planes from the middle of the nineteenth century into the early twentieth. The recorded sales are dominated by infill smoothers, jointers, miters, and small rabbet and shoulder planes, built as dovetailed steel or cast gunmetal shells stuffed with rosewood, exactly as the titles describe. Dovetailed construction, screwed sides, and a legible stamp lift an example; so do crisp rosewood with no shrinkage or repairs and a long original iron with matching wedge or lever cap. Later or plainer cast-iron bodies, replaced irons, and cracked or regluedinfill pull value down.
The 11 sales behind these figures come from Jim Bode Value Guide (10) and Jim Bode Tools (1), and run from 2020 to 2026; 1 closed in the last twelve months.
