About F. Nicholson moulding planes
Francis Nicholson worked in Wrentham, Massachusetts in the first half of the 18th century and is the earliest identified American plane maker; his freed slave Cesar Chelor later made planes in the same town. The surviving work is wooden bench and moulding planes, and the examples here follow the expected pattern: yellow birch stock around ten inches with the LIVING IN WRENTHAM imprint on the toe. Condition of that mark matters most, since a worn or partial stamp is hard to attribute. Complex profiles such as bolection mouldings and plow planes with their original wedges and irons stand above simple astragals and hollows.
The 10 sales behind these figures come from Jim Bode Value Guide (10), and run from 2021 to 2025.
