About Preston rabbet planes
Edward Preston & Sons worked in Birmingham, England, from the Victorian era into the early twentieth century, when the plane and spokeshave patterns passed to Record. The firm is best known for small metal-bodied tools: adjustable spokeshaves, shoulder and rabbet planes, router planes, and dovetailed infill smoothers and chariot planes, alongside beech moulding and chamfer planes and boxwood-and-brass rules and gauges. Numbered patterns such as the No. 1364 block and chariot planes and the No. 1354 infill smoother, intact rosewood infill and boxwood fittings, crisp maker's stamps, and original cutters and adjusters all lift value; rust, chips to wooden bodies, and replaced irons cut it.
The 13 sales behind these figures come from Jim Bode Value Guide (10), Jim Bode Tools (2) and Ted Dawson Antique Tools (1), and run from 2021 to 2026; 4 closed in the last twelve months.
