About Snell & Atherton spokeshaves

Snell & Atherton was an American maker of shoemaking and leatherworking tools based in Brockton, Massachusetts, a center of the shoe trade. Among the recorded tool types, the firm is known for small curved spokeshaves, including the No. 5 heel shave used to trim and shape shoe heels, which accounts for most of what turns up. Clear maker's marks, an unpitted sole and a blade with plenty of length left support value, as does an intact adjuster and original finish; the patented brass rule is a different line and stands on its own. Rust, replaced or heavily ground irons, and cracks at the thin curved throat pull an example down.
