These are different markets, not a contradiction. Dealers list restored, checked tools and price accordingly; marketplaces carry everything from collector-grade down to parts. Compare within a row, not across the table.

About Prentiss vises

Prentiss was an American vise maker based in New York, active from the later 19th century into the 20th. The recorded sales are all bench vises, and the sample runs to the small end of the range, including miniature examples of 1 3/4 and 2 inches with swivel bases. Value tracks condition and configuration: surviving original paint and pinstriping, a working swivel base, swivel jaws, and undamaged castings and screw threads all help, while repaired or welded bodies, replaced hardware, and stripped or repainted surfaces pull an example down. Patent-dated castings and the smallest sizes draw more interest than plain mid-size shop vises.

The 8 sales behind these figures come from Jim Bode Tools (6) and Jim Bode Value Guide (2), and run from 2021 to 2026; 6 closed in the last twelve months.
