About John S. Fray No. 110 braces
John S. Fray was a Bridgeport, Connecticut brace maker of the later nineteenth century, and the firm was eventually taken over by Stanley. The name is tied above all to the Spofford patent brace, whose split chuck closes on the bit with a clamping screw rather than jaws, and the No. 108 and No. 110 models that dominate the sample are the standard examples. Value follows sweep size, the condition of the rosewood head and handle grip, and a chuck that clamps tight without cracks or spread at the split; pitting, replaced woodwork, and a stripped clamp screw pull an example down.
The 20 sales behind these figures come from Jim Bode Value Guide (20), and run from 2021 to 2026; 1 closed in the last twelve months.
