About Chapin Stephens rules

Chapin-Stephens was a Connecticut firm based in Pine Meadow, formed from the merger of the older Chapin and Stephens rule businesses and operating into the early twentieth century. Boxwood and ivory folding rules were the mainstay of the output, alongside planes and other bench tools, and the shipbuilders' double bevel rule shown is typical of the numbered patterns the company cataloged. Value follows the model number and the scarcity of the pattern, the material, crisp legible graduations, tight joints and unsprung brass, and the absence of cracks, stains or shrinkage; molding planes turn on a clean sole, full length and an undamaged iron.
