About Stephens & Co. rules

Stephens & Co. worked in Riverton, Connecticut, during the second half of the nineteenth century, making boxwood and brass measuring rules. The best known product is the combination rule covered by the 1858 patent, sold as the No. 36, which folds a two-foot rule together with a level vial, bevel and inclinometer scale; caliper rules such as the No. 99 and shipbuilders' bevel rules like the No. 31 round out the line. Value follows crispness of the stamped markings and scales, sound hinges and joints, intact level glass, and brass that has not been overcleaned; cracked or shrunken boxwood, worn numbering and replaced vials pull an example down.

The 9 sales behind these figures come from Jim Bode Value Guide (7), Michael Rouillard Antique Tools (1) and Ted Dawson Antique Tools (1), and run from 2021 to 2026; 2 closed in the last twelve months.
