About Snell auger bits
Snell was an American auger and bit maker working in the nineteenth century. The recorded sales are all boring machine bits, the long-shanked augers with a square tang used in a hand-cranked barn beam boring machine rather than a brace, and the sample runs to heavy 2-inch diameters in lengths around 12 inches. Value follows cutting condition most closely: full unsharpened lead screws, sharp intact spurs and cutting lips, clear maker's stamping on the shank, and no pitting, bends, or shortening from repeated regrinding. Large diameters in the 2-inch range are less common than the small sizes.
The 17 sales behind these figures come from Jim Bode Value Guide (14), Ted Dawson Antique Tools (2) and Jim Bode Tools (1), and run from 2020 to 2026; 4 closed in the last twelve months. 2 listings for sets, pairs or lots of Snell auger bits were left out, because a set's price is not one tool's price.
