About J. Flint back saws

J. Flint was a saw maker working in Rochester, New York, in the nineteenth century. The recorded work is entirely backsaws, and the examples here are brass-backed carcass saws in the 12 to 16 inch range, a standard bench pattern for joinery cuts. Value follows a clear, legible maker's stamp on the brass back or blade, an unbroken and uncracked handle with intact horns, and a plate that retains width above the back with no kinks or heavy pitting. Longer blades and original sharpening carry more than shortened, heavily filed plates.
