About Johnson & Conaway back saws
Johnson & Conaway was a Philadelphia toolmaker of the nineteenth century, with saws stamped PHILADA on the blade or etched with the Double Eagle mark. Backsaws are the bulk of the recorded work, and the sample bears that out with 14-inch backsaws and brass-back tenon saws, alongside occasional rosewood bevel squares and small brass-and-steel try squares. Value follows a legible maker's stamp or Double Eagle etch, a brass rather than steel back, full blade depth with little sharpening loss, tight handle horns without chips, and clean rosewood on the squares.
