About Reed vises

The Reed name covers two distinct American makers: a 19th-century wooden plane shop in Utica, New York, and Reed Manufacturing of Erie, Pennsylvania, still known for vises, pipe wrenches and other pipe-working tools. The Utica work accounts for the beech and boxwood molding, plow and complex profile planes seen here, alongside the occasional iron infill smoother. Value follows profile complexity and material, with solid boxwood plow planes and double-boxed complex molders ahead of plain beech beads; crisp unworn moldings, a legible maker's stamp, full boxing with no chips, and an uncracked wedge and body matter most, while worm damage, shortened soles and replaced irons pull an example down.
