About Stratton Bros. levels
Stratton Bros. worked in Greenfield, Massachusetts, in the second half of the 19th century, and the firm was later absorbed by Stanley. Levels are essentially the whole output, built with rosewood or mahogany stock and heavy brass binding, from small pocket sizes through carpenters' lengths, as the 3 1/2 inch nickel-plated pocket level and the 8, 10, and 26 inch rosewood examples show. Tight, dark rosewood with crisp arrises, unbroken glass vials, intact brass plates and screws, and legible stamping carry value; short pocket and try sizes are scarcer than long carpenters' levels, while sprung or shrunken stock, replaced vials, and worn plating pull an example down.
The 36 sales behind these figures come from Jim Bode Value Guide (27), Jim Bode Tools (3), Ted Dawson Antique Tools (3) and 1 other source, and run from 2020 to 2026; 9 closed in the last twelve months.
