About J.B. Stohler axes
John Bemesdorfer Stohler was a Pennsylvania edge tool smith working in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. All recorded sales are axes, and the range runs from full-size felling axes to hatchets and light kitchen axes of about a pound, the small patterns being the more distinctive of the group. Value tracks a clear, complete maker's stamp, an unworn bit with plenty of steel left above the edge, and the absence of mushrooming or grinder damage to the poll and cheeks; a sound original handle and the smaller kitchen and hatchet forms carry more weight than a heavily reground felling head.
The 17 sales behind these figures come from Jim Bode Value Guide (16) and Jim Bode Tools (1), and run from 2020 to 2026; 1 closed in the last twelve months.
