About Vaughan & Bushnell axes

Vaughan & Bushnell is an American toolmaker based in Illinois, best known for hammers and other striking tools and still in business today. Its brief run of drop-forged bench planes, marketed as indestructible and built on a Bedrock-style bedding pattern, is the less common part of the line, and the numbered smooth and jack sizes here are the ones usually seen. Condition of the forged body and the presence of an original iron and lever cap with clear markings drive value; the 4 1/2 width and block planes turn up less often than the standard smooth and jack sizes, while pitting, cracks, or replacement cutters pull an example down.
